"New Old Year" by Sophia Kunkel
Frosty red cheeks and dazzling white smiles cross my vision,
Dancing under the skylit dawn of a new time and year,
Hidden beneath comfy scarves and woolen beanies
While the clock ticks onward
Towards an impending hour.
Boisterous laughter and shrieks of anticipation flood my ears,
A cacophony of breaths taken for granted,
Under the glint of a silver ball in Times Square
While the clock ticks onward
Towards a looming arrival.
Scents of sweetened hot chocolate and greasy fried snacks waft to my nose
Accompanied by graveyards of abandoned dreams and past hopes,
I turn and watch as the clock strikes midnight,
Then time reverses--
As do I.
Dancing under the skylit dawn of a new time and year,
Hidden beneath comfy scarves and woolen beanies
While the clock ticks onward
Towards an impending hour.
Boisterous laughter and shrieks of anticipation flood my ears,
A cacophony of breaths taken for granted,
Under the glint of a silver ball in Times Square
While the clock ticks onward
Towards a looming arrival.
Scents of sweetened hot chocolate and greasy fried snacks waft to my nose
Accompanied by graveyards of abandoned dreams and past hopes,
I turn and watch as the clock strikes midnight,
Then time reverses--
As do I.
